Women’s Health

Breast Cancer

Early detection of breast cancer through regular mammograms and other screening techniques can help catch cancers before they cause symptoms. Breast cancer is the most common cause of death in women between the ages of 45 and 55. Although breast cancer in women is a common form of cancer, male breast cancer does occur and accounts for about 1% of all cancer deaths in men. In the U.S. alone one out of every eight women suffers from this disease.

Menopause

Natural approaches to rebalancing the body during menopause can help temper the physical and emotional changes and reduce the risk of health complications such as osteoporosis. Natural menopause is said to occur when the ovaries start decreasing their production of the sex hormones estrogen and progesterone on a permanent basis. Some women can experience menopause early, either as a result of a surgical intervention, such as hysterectomy, or damage to the ovaries, such as from chemotherapy. Menopause that occurs before the age of 45, regardless of the cause, is called premature menopause. Stress, lack of exercise, progesterone deficiency due to missed ovulations, obesity, exposure to chemicals, synthetic hormone replacement therapy, poor diet, heredity and estrogen dominance are all factors in creating “hormone imbalance” which can also cause early menopause.

PMS

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the name of a group of symptoms that usually start up to 14 days before your period (menstruation). The symptoms usually stop soon after your period begins.

Most women feel some mild discomfort before their periods. But if you have PMS, you may feel so anxious, depressed or uncomfortable that you can’t cope at home or at work. Some of the symptoms of PMS are listed in the box below. Your symptoms may be worse some months and better others.

Infertility

An integrative approach to discovering the underlying causes of infertility can help resolve reproductive issues far more quickly than focusing on statistics and hormone tests. Approximately one in five couples has trouble conceiving a child. If a couple is unable to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse, they are said to be sub fertile.  In most cases, the couple can be helped with assisted reproductive technologies. For around one in 10 couples investigated for infertility, no cause is found. at least 9 percent of the reproductive age group of women.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, which means “porous bones,” causes bones to become weak and brittle. In most cases, bones weaken when you have low levels of calcium, phosphorus and other minerals in your bones. A common result of osteoporosis is fractures – most of them in the spine, hip or wrist. Although it’s often thought of as a women’s disease, osteoporosis also affects many men. And aside from people who have osteoporosis, many more have low bone density.

Osteoporosis is often called the “silent” disease, because bone loss occurs without symptoms. People often don’t know they have the disease until a bone breaks, frequently in a minor fall that wouldn’t normally cause a fracture. Many people confuse osteoporosis with arthritis and believe they can wait for symptoms such as swelling and joint pain to occur before seeing a doctor. It should be stressed that the mechanisms that cause arthritis are entirely different from those in osteoporosis, which usually becomes quite advanced before its symptoms appear.
