Lyme Disease Headlines Part 2: Advice From the Center for Natural and Integrative Medicine

Today we are focusing on treatments for Lyme disease. The Center for Natural and Integrative  Medicine invites you to review our last blog for introductory comments and symptoms of this tick born disease. Then you will be prepared for this detailed blog about some of the treatments.

The usual course of early treatment for Lyme disease is oral antibiotics. These usually include doxycycline for adults and older children, or amoxicillin or cefuroxime for adults, younger children and pregnant or breast-feeding women. A course of treatment can be anywhere from 10 to 21 days. If the nervous system is involved, it might even require a 28 day regimen of antibiotics.

We would be remiss if we did not mention that there is some medical controversy surrounding the treatment of the chronic form of this disease. Two associations, the IDSA, Infectious Disease Society of America, and the ILADS, or International Lyme and Associated Diseases Study are diametrically opposed to each other. On the one hand, IDSA simply does not believe that chronic Lyme disease is proven condition, and their official stance is that long term antibiotic treatments are unwarranted. On the other hand, the ILADS group believes that Lyme testing can be inaccurate and long term antibiotic treatments are totally justified.

We tell you about this only so that you will understand some of the conflicting opinions you might encounter if you research the disease on the Internet. We also caution you against impulse shopping on the Internet for the latest self prescribed miracle cures. Please take this disease seriously and follow your health care professional’s advice.
